Play.com Start Music Download Service

Play.com has launched a music download service offering unprotected songs from major record company EMI and independent labels.
The PlayDigital service will allow customers to download individual tracks and albums free from DRM (digital rights management) copy protection.

Prices are currently from 65pence a track and albums £4.95, cheaper than market dominator iTunes and available in the UK ahead of Amazon who started a similair service in the USA last year. A number of special offers are available currently, including Pink Flyod albums from £3.25, Queen's Greatest Hits at £6.99 and David Bowie - The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars (30th Anniversary Edition) at £9.95

So far the only major record company signed up is EMI, though the rest will surely follow quickly. Meanwhile Play are supporting Indie Labels such as Domino and making available there back catalogue for download.
